BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A 14-year-old boy gunned down this week in Buffalo was supposed to be a witness in a fatal stabbing involving his mother, sources tell News 4.
According to those sources, Ray Floyd Patterson III was going to testify in court that his mother allegedly acted in self defense, when she stabbed her boyfriend during an argument. Her boyfriend died at Erie County Medical Center a few hours later. Police have not said what will now happen with that case.
Patterson was killed and three teens were injured near the footbridge on Oakmont Avenue when police say Joseph Gant, 28, fired into a crowd. One witness told News 4 she heard 10 shots fired as two teenage girls were fighting each other on the bridge Tuesday afternoon.
Mayor Byron Brown said Patterson was an innocent victim and that he was not involved in the fight.
Gant is being held without bail on second degree murder and three counts of assault. He has a felony hearing later this month.
Police have asked the media not to share his photo, as it could taint the identification process in the investigation.
Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda and Mayor Brown said the community played a huge role in arresting the suspect.
“The community was very important in this arrest. They stepped up and came forward with information,” Derenda said. “I can’t stress enough how the community really got involved, the community really came forward.”
Patterson’s funeral will be held at True Bethel Baptist Church, on Ferry Street, next Thursday.
