Man accused of fatally shooting teen to appear in court

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) A man accused of fatally shooting a teen and wounding three others is expected to face a Buffalo City Court judge on Tuesday.

Joseph Gant, 28, is currently being held without bail on charges of second-degree murder and assault.

Police say Gant opened fire on a footbridge over Route 33 near the Kenfield Langfield Housing Projects last week. Fourteen-year-old Ray Floyd Patterson III was killed and three other teens were hurt.

The community is credited with helping lead police to Gant.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown said, “People did step up. People did speak up, and that’s why we have this arrest today.”

Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda said, “This was a 28-year-old adult that fired shots randomly into a crowd of kids, and he will pay his price for his actions.”

Gant’s felony hearing is expected to start Tuesday afternoon. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
