Bills QB coach Downing sees positive signs from Manuel

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WIVB) – Bills quarterbacks coach Todd Downing says EJ Manuel is on the right track in his development, but still has areas he needs to improve.

Specifically, Downing cited Manuel’s footwork and accuracy, although he said the two areas are related.

“As you look at the broad pictures of things, as he continues to develop, consistent footwork, that’s going to lead to accuracy and timing. That’s something that he’s working really hard on. Once we feel comfortable with all those timings, we’ll be on point,” said Downing.

Downing, who worked with Matthew Stafford in Detroit, praised Manuel’s off-the-field preparation.

“I’ve been fortunate enough to be around some good quarterbacks and be around some true pros, and he’s understanding the work it takes to be great,” said Downing. “I think that’s what catapults him to the next level and really helps him make that jump.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
