Agencies train on counter-terrorism tactics

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Police agencies trained together this week to detect, respond and defeat maritime threats.

The training sessions focused on counter-terrorism tactics, and were performed on and around the waterways throughout the county and city.

The training is part of a Homeland Security grant to enhance border security in Western New York. The Buffalo Harbor is an international port with vessels arriving through international waterways, raising the potential for an incident originating from a cargo ship or personal vessel, according to the sheriff’s office.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office, Buffalo Police Department, U.S. Customs, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Coast Guard completed the week-long exercise. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
