Two sisters accused of welfare fraud

OLEAN, N.Y. (WIVB) – Two sisters were arrested last week and charged with welfare fraud.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office says Melissa MacDonald, 29, and Danielle Jones, 26, both of Olean, acted together to receive more than $12,500 in child care subsidies from the Department of Social Services.

Deputies say between February 2012 and Deember 2013, Jones was the only approved child care provider for the children. But she was employed and working other jobs while filling out subsidy timesheets.

During those overlapping hours, authorities say MacDonald allowed other people to watch the children, causing she and her sister to receive money they were not entitled to.

Both women are charged with third degree welfare fraud, third degree grand larceny and four counts each of first degree offering a false instrument for filing.

They are due in court at a later date. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
