Supervisor secures decades-old grant for Amherst

AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) – Long-awaited grant money is finally coming to the Town of Amherst.

The town installed the Ellicott Creek bike trail in 1994. Part of the trail went through the University at Buffalo’s north campus, but the town was never reimbursed for that section.

Supervisor Barry Weinstein discovered the decades old grant while applying for a $347,000 state reimbursement for its open space acquisition program. He and other town officials worked with state lawmakers to complete the grant by having an ownership interest in the section of the trail that crosses the UB campus.

Once completed, the state gave the town $206,000. The money will be used to make park improvements. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
