Car strikes deputy, pinning him between vehicles

GRAND ISLAND, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Grand Island woman is accused of being on drugs when she struck an Erie County Sheriff’s deputy with her vehicle Wednesday morning, pinning him between two cars.

The sheriff’s office says Deputy Matthew Fuqua was interviewing Teresa Gilewicz at the Grand Island substation on Whitehaven Road around 9:15 a.m. when he went to the rear of her vehicle to speak to a colleague.

Officers say the 22-year-old put her vehicle in reverse, pinning Deputy Fuqua between the bumper of her vehicle and the bumper of a marked patrol vehicle.

Gilewicz was charged with driving while impaired by drugs. The incident remains under investigation and the sheriff’s office says further charges are possible.

Deputy Fuqua was treated for minor injuries and was released from an area hospital. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
