Three Buffalo firefighters hurt in overnight fire

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Three Buffalo firefighters were taken to ECMC after fighting flames in North Buffalo.
Shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, a fire broke out at 191 Shirley Avenue.

The Buffalo Fire Department says the homeowners were not home at the time of the fire in which three firefighters were hurt. One had to be dragged out of the home and will recover. The other two were taken to ECMC with non-life threatening injuries.

“We had a fireman from the initial tagline go down, [he] had to be dragged out of the building. He was taken to ECMC, I think he’s going to be OK. And two of the other firefighters were taken to ECMC also,” said Mike Swanekamp, Buffalo Fire Battalion Chief.

A derogatory message was spray-painted on the house. The fire department says that will be looked into as part of the investigation as to what caused the fire.

Damages are totaled at $110,000. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
