Teens caught making slow getaway on motorized shopping carts

CLARENCE, N.Y. (WIVB) – Deputies say it wasn’t hard to catch up with two teens who tried to steal motorized shopping carts from the Wal-Mart in Clarence.

The Erie County Sheriff’s Office was called to the Transit Road store on Thursday after the store manager said Devon Janiga, 19 of East Aurora, and his 17-year-old male accomplice had taken two carts, which are provided for people with disabilities.

By the time deputies arrived on scene, they say Janiga and his accomplice were making a slow getaway across the shopping plaza’s lawn. Both were taken into custody.

Sheriff Timothy Howard stated, “We just had a press conference yesterday about ensuring access for people with disabilities [at Ralph Wilson Stadium] and then these two individuals steal and damage a cart provided for those shoppers with mobility issues, it’s just idiotic.”

Both teens are charged with criminal possession of stolen property, criminal mischief with intent to damage property and petit larceny.

They were due to be arraigned in Clarence Town Court Friday afternoon.
