Explosions, gunfire echo off quarry’s walls

LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) – Residents in Niagara County will likely heard small explosions and gunfire on Wednesday, as a film crew shot scenes for a military-themed movie.

Beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday, film crews were at the LaFarge Stone Quarry to shoot scenes for “Where Heaven and Hell Collide.” Residents can expected to hear gunfire and small explosions until shooting wraps up around 3 a.m. Thursday.

This shoot is the “big scene” in the movie, which simulates a war zone in Afghanistan. There are stunt people at the quarry from Los Angeles and Vancouver, as well as some Marines who are not in the film, but came as consultants to help the director make the scene look and feel as close as possible to a battlefield in Afghanistan.

“Where Heaven and Hell Collide” is based on a man named Jim Peters and his organization, Tee Shirts for Troops, which has helped 11,000 combat troops. Actress Kristy Swanson, who has been in movies like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Dude, Where’s My Car?”, is appearing alongside veterans who were heroes overseas, not actors. Swanson plays Peters’ wife in the movie, which is about hope, friendship and the journey from the battlefield back to every day life.

On Tuesday, crews were inside the old Millard Fillmore Gates Hospital building shooting scenes. Gates Hospital represents Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington D.C. where Peters visits troops, encouraging them to live life to the fullest.
