Suspect jumps into river to avoid arrest

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. (WIVB) – Jamestown Police said a man jumped into the Chadakoin River to avoid being arrested Sunday night. Police said they pursued 31-year-old Angel Vargas-Mendoza after an armed robbery at a CVS Pharmacy on South Main Street in Jamestown.

A man wearing a ski mask and gray sweatshirt, armed with a knife, took cash from the store and fled the scene on foot. Police said bystanders gave officers enough information for them to track him down.

Police said they got Vargas-Mendoza out of the river, and found he had the cash from the robbery. Police said they linked him to two other armed robberies. He is facing three counts of first-degree armed robbery.
