Canalside bicyclist ferry pedals toward reality

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Plans are pushing ahead to create a landing point and bike path for a new Canalside bicycle and pedestrian ferry.

The ferry service will be available to bicycle and pedestrian traffic between Canalside and land near the Coast Guard Station.

New York State Assemblyman Sean Ryan announced that the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation has given its approval to improve the First Buffalo Marina, a big step in making the ferry a reality.

The first phase of the project project will cost $492,000, with $142,000 to design the improvements, and $350,000 in construction costs. The project will include the installation of a paved pedestrian pathway on land owned by the New York Power Authority.  Eventually there will be benches, a shelter and planters to welcome the ferry riders.

A public hearing will be held in the near future to discuss the planned improvements.
