BENNINGTON, N.Y. (WIVB) — The Town of Bennington town clerk was arrested Tuesday after investigators found the town till short $14,000 in fees collected for permits, fees and town tax collections.

Tina Metz, 54, was charged with one felony county of filing a false instrument and three misdemeanors for official misconduct.

“It raises a red flag when we discover cash missing and suddenly the clerk is repaying the town,” said Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli. “Unfortunately, my office continues to uncover instances such as this where inadequate financial controls result in public money being stolen or unaccounted for.”

The comptroller issued a report detailing  how Metz deposited portions of the missing funds back into the town accounts.  Some was cash she said was found in a cabinet in town hall.
