BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Two people were killed Tuesday morning in Buffalo’s Allentown neighborhood, apparently from gunshot wounds. Police said a man in his forties shot and killed his wife, before shooting and killing himself. At least three people who knew 46-year-old Matthew Mills from their Allentown neighborhood identified him as the shooter.
The apparent murder-suicide happened on College Street, near Maryland Street. Police responded to the area at around 7:30 a.m. after reports of gunshots.
The woman called police at about 9 p.m. Monday to say her husband was there, despite having an order of protection.
“They did all the reports. We believe we did everything proper with the reports. The suspect was gone at the time. He apparently returned this morning” said Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda.
Neighbors heard three shots, a pause, and then the final shot.
“And apparently after being told that the female told him that she was going back to Florida, we believe that he killed her, then killed himself.” said Derenda.
The couple has a long history of domestic violence, which goes to Florida and Tennessee where the couple recently lived.
Allentown is one of Buffalo’s higher rent districts, but just this summer, Police charged a sixteen year old with three rapes, and another domestic dispute led to an innocent bystander being shot on the patio of an Allentown bar.
A woman who lives nearby the scene spoke to News 4. Cara Schnelle said, “This is usually a very safe neighborhood, really quiet neighborhood, so it’s concerning to have something like this happen so early in the morning when kids are going to school, this is a safe neighborhood and it’s nerve wrecking.”
Detectives are investigating the case, and interviewing neighbors.
