CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) – Cheektowaga Police said they captured Shawn Bottomley, 36, Wednesday night. Police said he started a standoff on Mapleview Road that afternoon. The standoff came to an end just after 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Police say the incident started around 5 p.m when a woman called 911 from a neighbor’s house.
According to investigators, the woman and her husband got into an argument and he assaulted her. She left the house with her 2-year-old child and ran to her neighbor’s home.
“It looked like hand prints on her neck.” The victim’s neighbor David Ayers said, “She was upset. More or less she was upset that it happened in front of the child.”
When police arrived and went into the house to arrest the man, police say he pointed a gun at officers.
Cheektowaga Police Department Lieutenant Thomas Wentland said, “We started speaking with him and he began to make threats that he anyone that entered his house would be shot.”
They then sealed off the area and called the SWAT team to the scene. The standoff lasted for over six hours; no shots were fired and no one was injured.
“I’m very glad that she and my wife are close and she came here because if she didn’t, I don’t know what would have happened,” Ayers said.
Police said they found swords and a silver BB handgun in his home. Police told News 4 the silver BB gun is the weapon he aimed at police during the standoff.
He was charged for strangulation, two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, menacing, resisting arrest and harassment.
Officials got a search warrant Thursday morning, and investigators are going through the home to search for more evidence.
