ECC north campus expansion bogged down with dissent

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – The path to a new $30 million building project for Erie Community College’s northern campus could slow down after its opponents threatened a lawsuit.

Joel Giambra, former Erie County executive, along with  Buffalo Common Council member Joseph Golombek want to halt planning for the new project citing negative environmental impact.

Golombek said he’d rather see the new 55-thousand-square-foot building near downtown Buffalo.

“I believe that the medical science corridor should be filled with medical and science programs.  Whether it’s from Erie Community College, or from anything else,” Golombek said. “I think it’s just a natural fit in downtown Buffalo.”

Opponents to the building project are asking the New York’s Supreme Court to consider requiring an environmental study, despite ECC’s desire to break ground no later than early 2015.

ECC plans on housing classes for science, engineering and math in the new facility. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
