Attorneys want 13-year-old’s case in Family Court

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A 13-year-old faced a judge Monday morning, over the death of another boy his age.

Attorneys for Jean Sanchez are pushing to have his case transferred to Family Court because of his age. He was in Erie County Court Monday morning alongside his lawyers and a Spanish interpreter.

Sanchez is currently charged as an adult with second-degree murder, first-degree sexual abuse and first-degree sexual act.

He is accused of sexually assaulting then killing another 13-year-old, Ameer Al Shammari, back in May.  The Iraqi immigrant s body was found in a field off of Amherst Street in Buffalo’s Black Rock neighborhood.

There were no arguments on the motion to try Sanchez as a juvenile instead of an adult. The defense asked for more time. They will return to court December 16th

In the meantime, Sanchez is being held at the East Ferry Detention Center. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
