Islamic center owner hosts public meeting

WHEATFIELD, N.Y. (WIVB) — The new owner of Suzanne’s Fine Dining restaurant in Wheatfield announced Tuesday a meeting to educate people on his plans to convert the building to an Islamic cultural center.

Dr. Mohammed Agwa, along with his lawyer, received hate calls after his original announcement, but he’s hoping an open public forum will help answer any qualms the community may have.

Agwa wants to take his teaching skills from his Arabic class at Niagara University and implement them in classes at the proposed cultural center. He hopes to teach Tae Kwon Do, morality and Arabic classes after the renovation.

Some people in the Wheatfield community remain hopeful about the project.

Bob Cannizzaro said, “Our country is based on religious freedom, freedom from state sponsored religion, I’m OK with it, but as a nation we have to be diligent with everything we do, give everyone a fair and even break, but we need to keep our eyes open to everything that’s going on.”

The meeting is scheduled for Nov. 10, from 7 to 9 p.m., at the former restaurant on Niagara Falls Boulevard. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
