SPCA finds 72 dead animals in freezer

GETZVILLE, N.Y. (WIVB)  – The Erie County SPCA found 72 dead animals in the freezer of Dodge Boarding Kennels in Getzville Friday, but they rescued 71 others. The DEC took six frogs and turtles.

The SPCA said they found dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, chinchillas, tortoises, turtles, frogs and at least one chicken inside the business. They said they also found 72 dead animals in the freezer which were neatly bagged and labeled, some dating back to 2011.

The SPCA reports some animals are suffering respiratory infections, undernourishment, pressure sores, severe matting and inappropriate, unsanitary housing. The SPCA said the chinchilla and a cockatoo appeared to be underweight. Medical exams will be performed on all the animals.

In the past week, SPCA and peace officers visited the location two times. Both times they reported an overwhelming odor from urine and feces outside the building, and reported seeing unkempt conditions. A search warrant was issued for the property through Amherst Town Court on Thursday.

Charges are pending at this time.
