DEC reminds hunters to visit check in station

HOLLAND, N.Y. (AP) –– The state Department of Environmental Conservation is encouraging hunters to visit a deer and bear check station during next weekend’s opening of the regular big game season.

The check station is on Route 16 in Holland, Erie County, and will operate Saturday from noon until 8 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 7 p.m. Participation is voluntary and helps DEC gather data necessary for assessing the status of the area’s big game population.

DEC staff will determine deer age and collect other important biological and harvest information.

With black bear season opening the same day as deer season, staff will check harvested bears as well.
Technicians from the state Department of Health may also be present to examine deer for ticks and collect samples to test for Lyme disease.
