Officer shoots man in Rochester-area home

GREECE, N.Y. (AP) — Police in suburban Rochester say an officer has shot a man who pointed a gun at him inside a home.

Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan tells local media that police and animal control officers were called to the house just before 11 a.m. Sunday for a report of dogs running loose in the area.

Phelan said officers found two pit bulls and went to the home where they believed their owner lived. They found a door open, water running and a stove on.

The chief said a man inside the house pointed a gun at one of the officers, who then shot the man. The man was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital alive. The extent of his injuries wasn’t immediately known.

Greece police are working to identify the man. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
