Female veteran of WWII ‘doing great’ on this Veterans Day

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB)- News 4 has been saluting local veterans and service members on this Veterans Day. We asked our viewers to send in photos of their relatives who have served or are currently serving so we could show them on the air and on WIVB.com. We’ve been swamped with photos!

Some of the photos have come with interesting and touching comments or information about these veterans — including the one you see accompanying this story. Denise Brucato sent us this photo of her mother.

Doreen is now 90 years old, living in suburban Buffalo, and ‘doing great’ both physically and mentally, according to her daughter. She has outlived two husbands so her name has changed, but she was Doreen Mae Mex when this photo was taken in 1944. She was engaged at the time to Denise’s father, James Brucato.

Denise writes that her father was stationed in Manchester, England, during World War II so Doreen signed up for the Coast Guard. You can see she wore her uniform well and her family treasures this photo.

News Four sends our appreciation to Doreen for her service to our country. And, we are grateful to all veterans for their service, sacrifice and patriotism that has kept our nation strong.
