BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — It’s OK to miss church Sunday, Buffalo Bishop Richard Malone said.

Malone announced a dispensation — or exemption from a rule — Thursday evening for Catholics living in communities affected by the serious lake effect snow event.

“It will be up to the local pastor to decide whether or not to celebrate weekend masses in those parishes,” Malone said. “It is my advice that parishioners living in snowbound areas use their best judgement when it comes to attending mass.”

Malone is in the Vatican through Friday evening for a colloquium.

“We pray for those who lost their lives during the storm, and offer our gratitude to highway crews, first responders and neighbors helping neighbors, whose tireless efforts have demonstrated the resilient spirit of Western New Yorkers,” Malone said.

Malone said he hopes to aid in recovery efforts through Catholic Charities and Catholic Health.
