Canisius gears up for state title game

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Only two football teams are still practicing in New York state, with Canisius gearing up to take on Archbishop Stepinac this Sunday for the Catholic School state championship.

This is the first year for the game, which is being played a week later than planned due to last month’s snowstorm.

“It’s extremely special,” said senior T.J. Wheatley. “Last year, we won the Monsignor Martin championship, but it just felt like it wasn’t complete. Now we get to go out and complete for a state championship. There’s nothing better than that.”

The Crusaders will kick off at 2pm Sunday on Long Island, at the Mitchel Athletic Complex. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
