Amherst neighborhood heat restored after water main break

AMHERST N.Y. (WIVB) – Problems began Thursday evening after a water main break lead to problems with the gas line in the Hopkins and Klein Rd. Area of Amherst.  Crews from National Fuel worked nonstop since Thursday to repair the gas lines and restore heat to the homes.

Doug Able realized how cold his house was early in the morning on Friday.

“The house got down to about 52 degrees,” said Able. “So it was cold and halfway through the night my wife took the kids to a relative’s house because it was so cold she couldn’t tolerate it.”

Amy Blaszak was home with her three boys, who all had the flu. “So I go to turn on the stove to make them some chicken soup to get some food in them and there was no gas,” said Blaszak.

Almost all the homes here have heat Saturday night and neighbors say they’re happy it wasn’t too cold while they were waiting for their gas to be turned on.

“It looked literally like a war zone. There were trucks everywhere from National Fuel and the guys were great. They did everything they could to restore the heat and get everything back on,” said Abel. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
