BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A popular polar bear cub from the Buffalo Zoo is recovering and is expected to return to her exhibit. Luna_Dec2014_04

Luna the polar bear fractured her ankle joint in her left rear leg. Zoo veterinarian Dr. Kurt Volle, aided by vets from Sheridan Animal Hospital, performed the surgery and repaired Luna’s fracture.

The Buffalo Zoo says Luna was reunited with her playmate Kali, and with special cakes, celebrated their second birthdays.

Luna currently weighs 440 pounds, and her playmate Kali is 770 pounds.

The Buffalo Zoo says until Luna regains balance and full use of her hind leg, she will remain out of the exhibit, but will return when healed. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
