Rochester officer on leave after shooting suspect

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Rochester police officer is on administrative leave because she shot a suspect. This started Monday with a domestic dispute.

Someone called police about family trouble at home. Police say Juliano Plaza waved a knife at a female officer.

Investigators say the officer told the suspect to drop the weapon. He didn’t, and the officer pulled her gun.

Rochester Police Chief Michael Ciminelli said, “He did go down after the first shot.  He continued to maintain possession of the  knife.  At some point, he started to get back up holding the knife.  And that’s when you can hear the officer on the air saying, again I’m paraphrasing, you can listen to it, ‘He’s getting back up with the knife,’ and then there is a second shot fired.” provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
