BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – There is a bitterly cold start to the New Year throughout western New York. There is snow on the ground and icicles hanging throughout the region.

At Hoak’s Restaurant, in Athol Springs, there was an ice encapsulated car. Water sprayed on the car froze on contact.

Erie, Genesee and Wyoming Counties are in a Lake Effect Snow Advisory and the windchill is something people may have a hard time dealing with, it’s in the single digits Thursday morning.

Despite the cold start to the New Year, people are looking forward to 2015 and making their New Year resolutions.

Lauren Lepovich said her resolution is “just to be a better person.”

Pennsylvania resident Sarah Roque explained her resolution, “Probably be more physically fit, I’ve been eating a lot of junk food lately.”

Regardless of your resolution, make sure to keep yourself warm on Thursday.     Make sure to layer up, and have your hat, mittens, and scarf because you’re going to need them. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
