Arsonist pleads guilty to charges related to string of fires

NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) — An arsonist from North Tonawanda pleaded guilty in court Friday.

Michelle Johnston, 41, pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of second degree attempted arson in Niagara County Court.

Johnston put an entire street on edge for a string of at least eight fires she was accused of starting in North Tonawanda.

“I spoke with one of the tenants who was inside sleeping during Sunday morning’s big fire. He says, in his opinion, Michelle Johnston tried to kill him, ” Joe Basiak said.

She was eventually arrested after a series of cameras set up by police and neighbors caught an image of her. Police progressed from there.
