Hit-and-run crash claims one life

NEWSTEAD, N.Y. (WIVB) – An overnight hit-and-run crash in the Town of Newstead claimed a man’s life. The Erie County Sheriff’s Office said 38-year-old Francis A. Meldrum Jr, of Corfu, was killed.

Police said he was found dead at the scene, at 1 a.m. Monday on Indian Falls Road. The road was closed for about 12 hours after the crash.

A News 4 photographer saw a helicopter searching the nearby areas Monday morning, presumably for the car that hit the pedestrian. They are looking for a vehicle with front-end damage. News 4 is working to learn a description of the vehicle involved.

The incident is still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the Crime Stoppers tipline at 716-867-6161. The Greater Buffalo Metropolitan Crime Stoppers is offering up to a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest.
