Former jail guard sent behind bars

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – A former jail guard learned he is headed behind bars Tuesday. Charles P. Hunt, 49, was working at the Erie County Holding Center when he supplied drugs to the inmates he was supposed to supervise and protect.

Hunt was sentenced to 90 day in the Erie County Correctional Facility. His jail term will be followed by five years of supervised probation.

Hunt admitted to smuggling over an ounce of marijuana and a cell phone into the jail. Inmates already paid him $500 for the items, and were set to pay another $500 when the items were delivered.

An inmate who was looking for leniency in his own case tipped off officials about the situation. Detectives were waiting for Hunt when he arrived at work at the day of the planned exchange, and recovered the items.

Hunt was immediately fired by Erie County Sheriff Tim Howard. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
