BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A study which compared gun data from across the nation in 2013 found that New York State has the third lowest gun death rate in the U.S.
It found that New York has a gun death rate of 4.39 people per 100,000 people. That only beaten by Hawaii, who has a rate of 2.71 people per 100,000 people, and Massachusetts at 3.18 people per 100,000.
That’s an improvement from 2012, when New York was rated the fourth lowest, and Governor Andrew Cuomo attributed that to strong gun laws.
The states with the highest gun death rates per 100,000 were Alaska, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Wyoming. Each of those states has at least 17 gun deaths per 100,000, and Cuomo suggested it was due to lax gun laws, and the fact that in each of those states, the number of households which own a gun are between 45 and 62 percent of households, as opposed to 18.1 percent of households owning a gun in New York.
