Customers in Amherst react to local gym’s closure

AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) – “It’s very sad,” Kevin Donovan, a former Blast Fitness member said. “It’s very family oriented in there. Everybody’s friends; I’ve made a lot of friends through the years.”

Donovan said for the past 23 years he’s gone just about every day to work out and enjoy the socialization.

“Everyone has been members for 30, 40 years at this gym,” Alexis Santillo, another former member said.

Customers say they recently learned about the closure and that the gym is closing because the landlords wouldn’t repair the roof.

Former Blast Fitness member, Tina Reich said, “The people that owned the property just would not maintain the property or help them maintain the property.”

“It’s been a month battle,” Santillo said. “They were supposed to take care of it. They did not take care of it. The roof needed to be fixed. They would not fix it. “

Some patrons explained how common it was to see buckets capturing water from a leak in the ceiling when it rained. Santillo replied, “Yes. There have been buckets. A lot of buckets.”

Now people are searching for a new place to work out.

Blast Fitness posted a message on its Facebook page letting people know that their membership has been transferred to Crunch Fitness in Amherst. If they don’t want to go there, they can cancel it.

“I’m just going to check out Crunch and take it from there,” Reich said. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
