Police identify suspect in Attica motel standoff

ATTICA, N.Y. (WIVB) – The Attica Police have announced that they have arrested Michael A. Balla, 39, formerly of Marchias for a standoff between police that lasted 4 hours at the Attican Motel in Attica on Friday evening.

Police say that Balla called 911 and said he had a loaded gun and that he did not want anyone coming there because there would be an explosion when they walked in the door.

After an 4 hour standoff, Balla was taken into custody. He was transported to the Wyoming County Community Hospital for treatment of an apparent overdose and mental health evaluation.

He was released from the hospital around 3:30 p.m. Saturday and then taken into custody by the Attica Police Department.

Balla was charged with Falsely Reporting a Incident in the 2nd degree, a class E Felony. He was arraigned in Alexander Town Court and committed to Genesee County Jail on $20,000 bond.

Balla is scheduled to reappear in Alexander Town Court on Tuesday.

Additional charges are pending as the investigation is continuing.
