Construction begins on large solar project

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A project by SolarCity to make the largest solar manufacturing plant in the region is taking shape. Crews started work on the steel structure Tuesday.

Girders met ground Tuesday on the project which is posed to create 3,000 or more jobs in western New York, and 5,000 jobs in New York State. Hundreds of construction workers will work through the summer of 2015 to construct the one million square foot gigafactory.

The Start-Up N.Y. project is one which will cost over $5 billion in spending from a company which is receiving nearly $750 million in state aid. Governor Andrew Cuomo says the project will make Buffalo a world leader in solar energy.

Once complete, officials say Buffalo will have one of the largest locations for manufacturing solar panels in the world.

Louis Ciminelli’s company LPCiminelli is completing the construction of the massive facility which was in planning stages starting in 2008. It’s expected to be completed in early 2016. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
