Grocery chain may open on Ellicott Street

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – People living downtown could soon have another grocery option coming their way. Western New Yorkers will have another place to live if plans move through.

The plan would bring a major grocery chain to the 200 block of Ellicott Street. It wouldn’t just be a grocery store. Mayor Byron Brown hopes to build condos on the top floor as well.

Brown explained, “That type of housing is in short supply in downtown Buffalo. There is strong demand for people who want to own their own apartment in downtown.”

Brown said the project could also include a new garage for public parking. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
