Local woman celebrates 108th birthday

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — One golden Garden Gate resident in Cheektowaga celebrated a milestone.

Helen Silvia celebrated her 108th birthday at the senior center with special guests, including Cheektowaga Supervisor Mary Holtz, who proclaimed the day Helen Silvia Day.

Garden Gate was decorated in blue and white, as blue is her favorite color, she was given a hand made blue bracelet.

“At 108 years-old — I hope I look as good as her. She’s reading, she still plays bingo at times, she listens to music, so she does some activities,” Rhonda Gorman, a Garden Gate employee, said.

Silvia was born in 1907 in Massachusetts when Teddy Roosevelt was still president. At 89-years-old, Silvia moved to western New York to be closer to her family.
