Lawmakers pushing for tax breaks for brewers

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — With a boom in the craft beer, spirit and wine market’s popularity, lawmakers are pushing to stimulate the growth while making it easy on start-ups.

Those lawmakers are pushing for New York State tax breaks for brewers and distillers. Senators Tim Kennedy, Marc Panepinto appeared Thursday with Assemblyman Sean Ryan to promote a tax credit which appears in Governor Andrew Cuomo’s proposed budget.

“These tax exemptions already apply to wineries in New York State,” Kennedy said. “But what they what they would do for distilleries and breweries would be expansive.”

They appeared at the Lockhouse Distillery in Buffalo where distillers and brewers supported their cause.

“If we can get a little relief from these taxes, we can take that money and plow it into additional fermenters at Hamburg, addtional people hired at community beer works,” Tim Herzog, of Flying Bison Brewery, said.

The tax breaks would expand current wine tax breaks on promotional tastings to beer, cider and spirit producers. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
