Bob Bennett withdraws name from Board of Regents election

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Western New York’s long-time representative on the New York State Board of Regents is withdrawing his name from this year’s election.

Speaker of the Assembly Carl Heastie said he may recommend Catherine Collins for Bob Bennett’s seat. Bennett opted to step down before it goes to a vote.

Bennett has been on the board for 20 years. He went unchallenged in every bid for the seat.

This year’s election comes at a rocky time for the New York State Education system. Reforms like the Common Core Learning Standards and a new teacher evaluation system have divided the public.

Bennett talked about some of his successes, “When I was elected chancellor of course that was wonderful, my family was very proud and I spent seven years as chancellor, we really made a lot of changes. We had a big study done of the department. We started preparing for the new standards that went into effect in 2010.”

He said he hopes to stay involved in education after he steps down. His final meeting is this month.
