Niagara Falls ice climber given key to the city

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. (WIVB) — A man who made history in Niagara Falls received a big honor Tuesday — a key to the city of Niagara Falls.

In a stunt which shocked people around the globe, renowned ice climber Will Gadd scampered up the 90 degree climb up the Niagara Falls for the first time in known history. That stunt earned him a key to the city.

Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster thanked Gadd for the recognition he brought the city by giving him a key Tuesday, citing the spectacular images he’d never forget.

“I’ve done something like 65 interviews all over the world about this like from Japan to everywhere,” Gadd said. “I expected some interest, but the world got interested for sure.”

Gadd said of all the awards he’s received for his worldwide climbs, he’s never received a key to a city. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
