Buffalo State grad’s loved ones hold vigil

NEW YORK, N.Y. (WIVB) – A Buffalo State College graduate’s family wants answers, after he died in an explosion in New York City.

Nicholas Figueroa, 23, was found dead in the rubble after an explosion in New York City last week. His family wants justice for his death.

Nicholas’ heartbroken family joined about 100 people Monday night, who came together to remember his life. During Monday’s candle lit vigil, Nicholas’ family released white balloons and thanked the crews who worked tirelessly to find him.

Figueroa was killed during an explosion while he was on a date at a sushi restaurant in Manhattan. His body was one of two recovered this weekend from the scene of the blast.

The other body is believed to be that of 26-year-old Moises Locon.

Nicholas’ family said it’s a tragedy.

His mother Ana said, “My son came out in one piece and that’s all we can ask for, and that’s what we were praying for.”

His father Nick said, “He was beautiful, I can’t wait until see my son again, and kiss him and tell him that I love him.”

Sources said plumbers may have illegally made a connection to the gas line in the building’s basement and that may have triggered the blast.

Firefighters said they won’t know what happened until they reach the gas line in the building’s basement. That may happen as early as Tuesday.
