FAIRPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) — Democrat Louise Slaughter says she has every intention of running for Congress next year, seeking her 16th term.

Slaughter will turn 87 just three months before the 2016 election and she would be the state’s longest serving House member if she is re-elected.

The Congresswoman sent out an email to supporters this past weekend seeking donations for her campaign.

Slaughter is the only microbiologist in Congress representing the 25th District, encompassing the Rochester area.

Slaughter’s likely Republican opponent is Mark Assini, the town of Gates supervisor. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
