Child molester sentenced to 15 years behind bars

ALBION, N.Y. (WIVB) — An Orleans County Pastor who was convicted of molesting his own grandchildren was sentenced Monday to spend 15 years behind bars.

Roy Harriger, 71, was convicted of two counts of Course of Sexual Conduct for molesting two of his grandchildren, but those family members aren’t the only ones who stepped forward. In total, more than 15 people signed affidavits saying Harriger had molested them.

Orleans County Court Judge James Punch sentenced Harriger to seven and a half years on each count of sexual conduct to be served consecutively. His family was in attendance during the sentencing, and many have been vocal about the need for a conviction and jail time.

His own son George Harriger called the sentencing ‘awesome’.

“We were afraid our whole life, and if we would’ve thought we’d get justice,” he said. “He told us our whole life ‘Who are they going to believe, you or me’, and he was right all these years even church people and everyone believed him.”

Until Harriger was jailed, he continued preaching at Community Fellowship Church in Johnson Creek.

The lead investigator, NY State Police Sergeant Michael Notto says this case involved victims in New York, Pennsylvania, and Michigan dating back as far as forty years.

“If people would just talk more cases like this would come to light,” Notto said.

Harriger will be 86 before he is eligible for parole, and his own son is hoping he doesn’t make it out alive.

“All I can say to other victims out there please don’t hesitate to come forward, Harriger said. “Tell somebody, tell a teacher, tell somebody.”
