Locals remember fallen officer in Lockport

LOCKPORT, N.Y. (WIVB) — Citizens and officers alike honored the memory of a western New York native who died in Florida recently.

When Officer Jared Forsyth’s body arrived in Lockport Tuesday night, his family, mourners and police stood by to honor him. Forsyth died last week in Florida during a gun range accident. A fellow officer accidentally shot him through the side and arm when a gun discharged during cleaning.

His aunt said she hopes some changes are made to better protect officers.

“It was just a horrible accident, they should have protection on the side of their vests like the military vests so nothing like this happens again,” Mary Forsyth said.

Forsyth attended Lockport High School and Niagara Community College. He left western New York about five years ago.
