Dentists offer free care to local veterans

AMHERST, N.Y. (WIVB) — Nearly 100 local veterans received free dental care over the weekend.

Community dentists, the UB School of Dental Medicine and Mayor Byron Brown launched the “Dentistry Smiles on Veterans” event at the South Campus.

In the first of its kind event, veterans received free cleanings, procedures and examinations. There were also oral surgeons on hand to perform emergency procedures.

The veterans who received free care do not have dental insurance through the VA.

“Some of them needed extractions. Some of them were in pain. Some of them needed new dentures,” said Dr. Stephen Abel, D.D.S. “They were able to come here today and meet our faculty, meet community dentists, and get this all done for free.”
