Crews respond to fatal fire at senior apartments

CHEEKTOWAGA, N.Y. (WIVB) — Cheektowaga fire crews responded to the scene of a blaze at an apartment complex on William Street in Cheektowaga.

Police were first on the scene at Williamstowne Senior Apartments, making a well-being check on a woman whose work called authorities to report her not showing up. Those officers found a dead woman and a fire inside her apartment. Crews rushed to the scene after police called for help. Fire crews extinguished the flames Friday afternoon.

“We received a call that they were looking for a woman who failed to show up to work,” Cheektowaga Police Chief James Speyer said. “She lived here at the Williamstowne Village. Our officers came here to check on here, and when they got here they noticed smoke coming from the apartment.”

Investigators don’t yet know what started the fire, and the woman’s death is under investigation. Her identity isn’t yet being released. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
