Prolific bank robber sentenced to jail time

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The man who has been called the most prolific bank robbers of this era is heading to jail Friday.

Michael Mitchell, 22, was accused of robbing 22 banks and helping others rob them by teaching them his methods. He pleaded guilty to just six of those robberies and helping others rob a seventh in January. Thursday, a judge sentenced him to serve nine years behind bars.

His method of robbery was simple and he followed it each time. He passed a note to the teller and threatened use of a weapon if he didn’t get the money he demanded.

Mitchell targeted local First Niagara, M&T Bank and KeyBank locations.

Police say although the investigation took time to complete, all bank robbers eventually get caught. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
