Police search for bank robber, say he left a fake explosive device

TOWN OF TONAWANDA, N.Y. (WIVB) — The search is still on for a man who robbed the Bank of America branch in the Town of Tonawanda on the threat of explosives.

Police blocked off a large area of the town Thursday after the robber left behind what he told tellers was an explosive device. Police utilized the Erie County Bomb Squad and a robot to remove the device. Now police say the suspect left a false device. Police say they’re going to keep the device on hand to prosecute him if he is caught.

The search just after the device was clear utilized a K-9 unit to track the suspect, but it came up empty.

Police say they’re searching for a white man around 50-years-old with a scruffy beard. He was last seen wearing a blue and grey plaid hat, black knee-length trench coat and dark pants with black shoes. He has black rimmed glasses and a band-aid on the left side of his face.

Anybody with information is asked to call Town of Tonawanda Police at (716) 879-6613.
