BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Thousands of gallons flooded the canals at Canalside Friday, but they’re not for swimming.
Water filled the canals for the first time since they were rebuilt, and now the 60,000 people who enjoyed skating on the canals can enjoy summer waterfront sports. Tom Dee, the president of Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation said when hundreds of thousands of gallons of water flooded the canals, it marked progress.
Dee said visitors will be able to drive paddle boats, motorized sailboats and other things people can take on the canals.
New businesses will also flood the area. A smoothie bar is planned and craft beer stands will join the ranks of vendors and food trucks which appear in the bustling area.
Today seeing the water go into these historic canals, is just another chapter in the continued success in what we’ve been able to offer to the waterfront,” Dee said.
Memorial Day typically marks the start of summer at Canalside, but Dee said this year will spark early with activities which will be announced soon.
