SANBORN, N.Y. (WIVB) — Firefighters in Niagara County battled flames in fields in Sanborn Monday afternoon.

A brush fire broke out near Old Shawnee Road on Saunders Settlement Road. Due to high temperatures and winds, firefighters can have a hard time battling brush fires. Fire crews could be helped by incoming rain which is set to hit later in the day.

On May 4, a Red Flag Warning warned of the combustibility of western New York’s surroundings. Although there wasn’t a Red Flag Warning in effect, the region had scorching temperatures over a week period.

Police and fire crews are working to both contain the area and maintain safety. Officials urged drivers to use alternate routes to avoid the fire. provides commenting to allow for constructive discussion on the stories we cover.
